Three Dimensional Analysis of Microstructures

چکیده
When using traditional metallographic techniques, materials scientists often make assumptions about the shape, distribution and connectivity of three-dimensional features that lie buried within the material. Recent work has shown that these assumptions can be incorrect. An approach to threedimensional analysis of microstructures is demonstrated here in three different alloy steels. Proeutectoid cementite, ferrite and an entire pearlite colony were characterized using computer-aided visualization of three-dimensional reconstructions from serial section images. The present paper describes various experimental techniques, as well as recent results and advances in computer-aided reconstruction and visualization. Introduction

Computational Micromechanics of Particle-reinforced Composites: Effect of Complex Three-dimensional Microstructures
It is of interest to incorporate quantitative characterization of actual three-dimensional microstructures in micromechanical analysis of composites due to the dominant influence of microstructural features on the material behavior. In this paper, a methodology has been developed to perform finite element-based simulations on complex three-dimensional microstructures, through its application to...
متن کاملStereological Techniques for Quantitative Characterization of Microstructures
It is well known that material chemistry and processing dictate material microstructure and microstructure influences properties and performance of materials. Consequently, quantitative characterization and statistical representation of microstructure are of considerable importance in materials science. Microstructure is essentially a collection of three-dimensional volumes (for example, grains...
متن کاملSelf-folding of three-dimensional hydrogel microstructures.
This letter describes the fabrication of three-dimensional particulate-like hydrogel microstructures using a combination of soft lithography and volume expansion induced self-folding. Bilayer structures are produced by solvent casting and photocuring of liquid resins. They curl into three-dimensional (3D) structures upon contacting with water due to differential swelling of the two layers. The ...
متن کاملReconstruction of three-dimensional anisotropic microstructures from two-dimensional micrographs imaged on orthogonal planes
A pervasive method for reconstructing microstructures from two-dimensional microstructures imaged on orthogonal planes is presented. The algorithm reconstructs 3D images through matching of 3D slices at different voxels to the representative 2D micrographs and an optimization procedure that ensures patches from the 2D micrographs meshed together seamlessly in the 3D image. We show that the meth...
